Sherlock Holmes

So I had big doubts of what Guy Ritchie was going to do with Sherlock Holmes. Having read a fair chunk of the stories when I was a little younger, thanks to a ‘Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes’ book I was given which happens to be written in the smallest font know to man! I feel I know the character fairly well. I got a little off topic there, my point was I was a little concerned as to what Ritchie would do to the character but felt I had to see it, in much the same way as you can’t help but look at a car accident when you pass one even though you don’t want to! I’m digressing again, sorry back to the movie.

We join Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and Dr. Watson (Jude Law) as they are at the end of a case to catch a serial killer and occult “sorcerer” by the name of Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong). Dr. Watson is just about to move out of Holmes’ house and get married. Is this there last case together? Well, of course it’s isn’t (it would be a pretty short movie if it was!), when Blackwood mysteriously returns from the grave to continue killing. Holmes has to find out what’s going on before too many are killed, he is assisted by a somewhat reluctant Watson and Inspector Lestradethe (Eddie Marsan), while being distracted by temptress Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams).

Holmes is a deeply intelligent detective who can solve the seemingly insolvable mysteries and he has to use all his skill here. I’m relieved to say some of that intelligence isn’t lost, yes it’s definitely a Guy Ritchie film, his stamp is all over it and Sherlock Holmes purists are probably not going to enjoy it, but as a movie, it’s not half bad. It’s amusing, entertaining and the plot is pretty good to.

I love most of the Robert Downey Jr movie’s I have seen and he puts a good performance in here as Sherlock, what you’d expect from him really, very Downey and not perhaps a traditional portrayal but I thought it was pretty good. The rest of the cast also perform pretty well with no one looking particularly out of place.

Overall much better than I’d expected and a much better effort from Guy Ritchie’s compared with the last couple of movies. Don’t expect anything revolutionary or anything close the the original stories bu it’s pretty entertaining stuff and I’d say it’s worth checking out.
