During World War 2 a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as “The Basterds”, under the leadership of Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pritt) set out to brutally kill Nazis. “The Basterds” are enlisted to help with an operation to blow up a cinema which will contain the heads of the Third Reich at a film Premiere. This cinema is owned by Shosanna Dreyfusare (Mélanie Laurent), a Jewish refugee who when younger had witnesses the slaughter of her family by the Nazis and is out to plan her own revenge.
What to say about Tarantino’s latest film? Sure he plays around with history which would normally really annoy me but it is so absurd in this case it doesn’t matter. I also wasn’t a fan of some of the on screen ‘doodles’ (you’ll know what I mean if/when you see it), I just didn’t feel they fitted in with the style of the rest of the movie. That’s it, that’s the only negatives I can find. In a summer of countless boring, uninspiring films (with ‘Moon’ being the only exception) what Tarantino has produced is a fun, dramatic, enjoyable film. I don’t want much more than that, despite what people may think (if you read some of my other reviews) I’m pretty easy to please.
On top of just being a good film, I love the attention to detail of every scene, the lighting, the camera position, everything has been planned. I like Tarantino’s use of different shots in particularly I think he uses close up shots really well (the classic one I can think of is Uma Thurman’s foot in Kill Bill), he uses them again a couple of times to good effect in this movie. I also think he is great at picking just the right music for every scene, real thought goes into it so it adds not distracts from the scene. All this extra?! thought just adds to overall impression of the film.
Expect Tartino’s no holds barred approach to Nazi Brutality (not for the squeamish) which I’m not a huge fan of but it doesn’t bother me and as I was left with a certain amount of satisfaction when I left the cinema this, for me, this has to be the best film of the summer and I highly recommend it.
