So I decided to venture into the latest addition to the new Westfield Centre in Derby. Before the cinema was opened I wasn’t over optimistic, I was worried about the price and I’m not a great fan of the current showcase cinema in Derby. I do think having a cinema in a city centre rather than in the outskirts as it is much easy for people to get to.
Firstly, the Price, well for a standard ticket it’s £7 (slightly cheaper during the day, I think), not the cheapest but only about 50p more than the cinema I normally go to. There is also a ‘director’s hall’ which you pay a premium for, for that you get leather seats and private lounge for food and drinks.
What did I think? You go up the escalator into the cinema from the shopping centre. I was greeted by someone who pointed me in the right direction. The lobby area is very open and modern, very different from alot of cinemas where it is just a empty void. There is a restaurant to one side, a large snack area to the other (with a row of at least 10 LCD screens showing prices), the ticket desk is between the two. It’s a really good first impression.
When buying the ticket I was given a rough seating choice (top, middle or bottom). I headed for the screens and was given appropriate directions, at the door to the screen I was met and escourted by an usher to my seat. The screen was nice and big, as I like and the sound was well balanced and clear, the seats were reasonably comfortable though you had to tip the chair back slightly (a bit odd).
Overall I had an enjoyable visit (it helped the film was pretty good), it all looks very impressive and I like the personal touch, it makes going to the cinema a little bit special. It is a bit expensive but I feel this is the case generally and I wish they did a monthly pass a cineworld do and then they would have a more regular visitor.
