The Ram’s lose another Manager

Last season as a Derby County fan it was pretty hard, however, I thought one major plus was we had a manager in charge who would stabilize the club and give us more organization both on and off the pitch, that man was Paul Jewell, I thought he was a great appointment, he seemed to what to build a future with Derby. This season has not shaped up the way I’d hoped and I have been disappointed with some of the purchases he has made and some of the performances. I still rate him as a manager and feel he could be the right man for the job given more time, people seem to want instant fixes.

Unfortunately, Mr Jewell announced his resignation on Sunday and that has left Derby manager less again. This raises the major problem at Derby, a stable manager (or lack of it). Just to emphasis how big a problem this is, Derby have had 8 managers since 1995, of those 8 managers one was Jim Smith who lasted 6 years, this was the last time there was any stability at the Club (also the last time we had some consistency – coincidence? I think not!).

John Port School Band

The first major site I designed was for John Port School Band, it was a very basic design but from the very beginning I wanted to design standard compliant sites. I played in John Port School Band during my time there and decided to create a website for old members so that they could stay in touch more easily and keep up to date with the latest information about the band.

I originally designed the site using iframes, but as soon as I started to discover the wonders of CSS I quickly set about redesigned the site using CSS. Considering this was my first ever website I am still pretty proud of it, yes the look of it isn’t quite as good as my more recent websites but still I don’t think it’s too bad for a first attempt.

“I’m a PC” – I think Not!

I’ve been thinking about how odd the “I’m a PC” advert is since the first time it emerged.  I was so surprised when I saw it, if you’ve not seen it yet, you can find it on youtube, basically as I see it, it’s a direct reply to Apple’s “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” series of adverts. The Apple adverts are attack on some of Windows short comings, I’m not surprised by these adverts, Apple is very much the underdog in terms of number of sales and a good way to ‘steal’ Windows customers is to find out the problems people have with Windows and bang on about them, so people think, “yeh, that does annoy me, is there something else on the market which wouldn’t have that problem?” It has really always been the Apple Strategy, perhaps they have been more vocal about it recently.

These new Windows adverts are the first time I can remember Microsoft having a direct ‘go’ at Apple and to me it almost acknowledges Mac as an alternative, previously Microsoft haven’t even admitted that Apple are a competitor. For me, if they are going to play on Apple’s adverts they have got

wordpress 2.7 a worth while update (so far)

So I was just about to write another post (the next one), but thought I best write this one first.  I’ve been using wordpress for a bit now, I had a little break from it due to spam problems (that I’m no longer getting) but have now returned. Why do I use it? Well I designed my own blogging tool and it worked OK but the flexibility and sheer amount of options of WordPress, just means it is so much better than what I produced, it’s free, easy to use and well supported. There are other blogging tools out there but for me WordPress is the best. Anyway back to 2.7 – I  try and keep my WordPress install up to date (it’s really easy) but I have to be honest the vast majority of updates have not made a massive difference to the usability, it’s just been behind the scenes stuff.  I was expecting much the same from the 2.7 update.

How wrong I was, they have massively overhauled the dashboard (administration area) in WordPress 2.7 or “Coltrane” as they are calling it.  It’s miles more customizable, faster and just a much slicker interface to use, I’m really liking

Movies page at last

Those of you who actually visit my site occasionally may remember me saying I wanted to add a movie review page, due to the number of films I currently watch I wanted it to be easy to update. Well, the more observant among you will notice the ‘movie’ link now in my menu. I found this great wordpress plugin, nearly exactly what I wanted. I want to do a bit to the styling and it would be nice to be able to pull movie poster images but it looks good.

In other movie news, I went to see ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ at the cinema this week, yes the 1946 classic which I’d never seen before, they had a special screening, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had no surround sound, was in 4:3 ratio and in black and white, the special effects were rubbish, but you know what it had characters I ended up carrying about and a plot that had a message. It got me to thinking about modern films, they are mostly about who did the best chase scene, the best action sequence, best special effects, who made the most money, how much
